Shell Island Day Trip During Spring Break: Is It Worth It?
After several days of packed beaches, loud clubs, and nonstop stimulation, Shell Island feels like stepping onto a different planet. This undeveloped barrier island sits just off the coast of St. Andrews State Park, accessible only by boat, and offers the cleanest, quietest beaches in the PCB area.
Is it worth it? Absolutely — especially as a mid-week reset.
What Is Shell Island?
Shell Island is a 7-mile-long undeveloped barrier island between the Gulf of Mexico and St. Andrews Bay. There are no buildings, no roads, no vendors, and no crowds. Just sand, water, dunes, and wildlife. It’s one of the last undeveloped barrier islands on the Gulf Coast.
The island is known for its crystal-clear water, excellent shelling (hence the name), and the chance to see dolphins, sea turtles, and other wildlife in their natural habitat.
How to Get There
Shuttle boats from St. Andrews State Park run regularly during the season. Round-trip tickets cost approximately $20–$25 per person. Boats depart every 30–60 minutes and the ride takes about 10 minutes.
Private boat rentals and pontoon boats are available from Grand Lagoon and can take you directly to Shell Island. This costs more ($150–$300 for a half day) but gives you flexibility on timing and location.
Kayak or paddleboard from St. Andrews — it’s about a 1-mile paddle across the pass. Only attempt this if you’re an experienced paddler, as the current in the pass can be strong.
What to Bring
Bring everything you need for the day — there is nothing on the island. Water (plenty of it), food and snacks, sunscreen, a towel, an umbrella or shade structure, a cooler, a waterproof phone pouch, and trash bags (leave no trace).
Don’t bring: Glass containers (prohibited), large tents or structures, or anything you aren’t prepared to carry back.
💰 Spring Break Tip: The PCB Club Card gets you discounted entry to the biggest events and parties all season long. Use code PARTY at checkout to save 10%.
What to Do on Shell Island
Swimming: The water on the Gulf side is some of the clearest you’ll find anywhere on the Panhandle coast. The bay side is calmer and shallower.
Shelling: Shell Island lives up to its name. Sand dollars, conch shells, and various other shells are common finds, especially in the morning before other visitors arrive.
Snorkeling: The jetties near the west end of the island offer decent snorkeling. Bring your own gear.
Wildlife watching: Dolphins are frequently spotted in the waters around Shell Island. Sea turtles nest on the beaches. Various shorebirds inhabit the dunes.
Just existing: Honestly, the best thing to do on Shell Island is nothing. Lay on a pristine beach, swim in crystal water, and enjoy the silence. After days of spring break chaos, the peace is therapeutic.
Tips for the Trip
Go early. The first shuttle boats leave around 9–10 AM. The island gets busier as the day progresses. Early arrivals get the best spots and the most unspoiled experience.
Take the last shuttle back. Don’t miss it. There’s no other way off the island (unless you arranged private transportation). Check the shuttle schedule and set an alarm.
Protect yourself from the sun. There is zero shade on Shell Island unless you bring your own. The sun is intense, and you’ll be exposed all day. Sunscreen, a hat, and an umbrella are essential.
Leave no trace. Pack out everything you bring in. Shell Island stays beautiful because visitors respect it.
