How to Avoid Getting Scammed During Spring Break in PCB

Where there are large crowds of young people spending freely, there are people trying to take advantage. Most spring break “scams” in PCB aren’t violent or criminal — they’re just overcharges, misleading offers, and deals that aren’t what they seem.

Common Scams and Rip-Offs

Overpriced beach gear rentals. Vendors on the beach rent chairs, umbrellas, and jet skis at wildly varying prices. The guy right in front of your hotel might charge $40 for a chair setup while a vendor 200 yards down the beach charges $20 for the same thing. Walk around and compare before committing.

“Free” drink tickets that aren’t free. Street promoters sometimes hand out “free drink” cards or “VIP entry” passes. Read the fine print — these often require a minimum purchase, only apply before 9 PM, or are for a watered-down drink at a venue you weren’t planning to visit.

Bait-and-switch accommodations. Some rental listings look great online but are outdated photos of renovated units. When you arrive, you get the un-renovated version. Book through reputable platforms with recent reviews, and document the condition at check-in.

Unauthorized party promoters. People on the strip sometimes sell “tickets” to events that don’t exist or aren’t what they claim. Only buy event tickets through official venue channels or established platforms like Eventbrite.

Surge pricing exploitation. Some local transportation services (not Uber/Lyft) will quote inflated prices to spring breakers who don’t know the going rates. Stick to Uber/Lyft for transparent pricing, or agree on a price before getting in any vehicle.

💰 Spring Break Tip: The PCB Club Card gets you discounted entry to the biggest events and parties all season long. Use code PARTY at checkout to save 10%.

How to Protect Yourself

Use established platforms. Buy event tickets through Eventbrite or directly from venue websites. Book accommodations through Airbnb, VRBO, or Hotels.com. Use Uber/Lyft for rides.

Compare prices. Don’t take the first offer for beach rentals, water sports, or boat tours. Walk around and get multiple quotes.

Read the fine print. “Free” anything usually has conditions. Ask what they are before accepting.

Keep your wallet secure. Use a front pocket, crossbody bag, or money clip. Don’t flash cash. Don’t carry more than you need for the day.

Document everything. Take photos of your rental property at check-in. Screenshot confirmation emails. Save receipts.

Trust your instincts. If an offer seems too good to be true, it is.
